Faster way to sync my new Bitcoin wallet?

1

I'm very new to Bitcoin so I apologize if this question is naive. I just downloaded the Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Dogecoin Qt clients and opened each of these apps. Consistent with their coin's valuation, the Dogecoin client syncing was fastest, taking 3 hours, Litecoin took 20hrs, and Bitcoin is still trying to sync for 3 days now (progress bar shows only 25% synced).

I'm using a 2012 MacBook Pro (10.7.5) and have a good internet connection in a major city. Some questions:

Is there a faster way to sync my Bitcoin wallet than what I described or is the Bitcoin Network just too popular now and one should expect a new wallet to take +10 days to establish? To begin with, is putting your own wallet on your computer not...

This page compares and reviews the best Bitcoin wallets available today

As a general rule, Bitcoin hardware wallets are the most secure form of Bitcoin wallets, however, unlike software wallets, they cost money. If you’re serious about securing your Bitcoins go for a hardware wallet. If however you’re only storing a small amount of coins you can use one of the free software wallets shown on this page.

Ledger Bitcoin wallet review

Summary: Much like TREZOR, Ledger is a cold wallet designed for users who want increased security. The wallet is actually a physical device that connects to your computer and acts as another source of protection. Meaning, you can’t send Bitcoins from your wallet without owning the physical device. If you’re looking for a cold wallet (e.g Ledger or TREOZR) I’ve compared the two in this post.

Ledger offers a variaty of products such as Ledger Nano S, Ledger Unplugged (a contactless Bitcoin wallet), etc. The most popular model...

I recently got a new phone and imported the wallet from the old one. The app has been synchronizing now for a few weeks and can't seem to get past "8 months behind". It got to 9 months behind within one day, spent a day or two at 9 months, and has been at 8 months ever since. I have the Connectivity Indicator notification turned on and there are always connected peers, but I can't see anything else to indicate it hasn't become stuck.

I have also noticed that the app is prone to crashing (I noticed this to a larger degree on my old phone too, perhaps because it was fully synchronized). When the app crashes, the connectivity indicator remains in the notification drawer, but I'm not sure if it actually is continuing to sync at this time.

Is there a way to check that syncronization is actually progressing and hasn't stagnated? Is there any information I can provide to help with debugging?

Why Bitcoin Core Won’t Sync

While bitcoin core is the original and most recognized bitcoin wallet, it is also extremely bulky and requires a ton of resources to run. With the bitcoin core wallet you have to download the entire bitcoin blockchain (over 8 years of bitcoin transactions) and keep it synced to be able to spend your bitcoin. The bitcoin blockchain is over 100 GB in size which is too large for most users to store and can still take weeks for some people to download before they can use the wallet. Many people accidentally send bitcoin to their core wallet without realizing how long it will take to sync, then decide they would like to use another wallet. This guide will help you recover your bitcoins from bitcoin core, then transfer them to a lightweight wallet that is easier to use.

How To Recover Coins From Bitcoin Core

If you have sent bitcoins to your core wallet and can’t wait to synchronize the wallet, you can export your private keys and...

If you are just getting into Bitcoins and started by installing the Bitcoin wallet on your computer you may notice that the synchronization process with the Bitcoin network is taking up quite some time. This is due to the very large blockchain that has been generated so far and it will continue to grow even bigger, so besides more than 10 Gigabytes of space you need to be ready to wait a bit. There is however a clever solution that might speed thing up, you can download a file to help you import most of the blockchain locally much faster and then synchronize with the rest of the network in no time.

– Download and install the Bitcoin wallet software, run it and then close it.
– Download the bootstrap.dat file (via a torrent client).
– Copy the bootstrap.dat file in the folder \Users\YOUR_WINDOWS_USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Bitcoin (for Windows) or in the Bitcoin data folder for other OSes
– Run the Bitcoin software to import most of the blockchain locally and then...

Bitcoin is the currency of the Internet: a distributed, worldwide, decentralized digital money. Unlike traditional currencies such as dollars, bitcoins are issued and managed without any central authority whatsoever: there is no government, company, or bank in charge of Bitcoin. As such, it is more resistant to wild inflation and corrupt banks. With Bitcoin, you can be your own bank.

At some point, pretty much everybody who uses cryptocurrency will come across this problem: your wallet just won’t sync. It gets stuck on a certain block and won’t download / process the rest of the
The term blockchain is derived from the two English words 'block' and 'chain'. An individual 'block' refers to all of the transactions which have taken place within a fixed period of time. Each block contains information to identify its immediate predecessor, which therefore links all of the blocks together into a long 'chain' going back to the network's very first transaction.">blockchain.

Although every altcoin is different and there may be a unique or exotic problem affecting your particular wallet, there are some very common problems and solutions that seem to work 99% of the time.

Is it Really Stuck?

Before you go any further you do need to check that your wallet really is stuck and it isn’t just being very slow to sync.

There are three ways to...

MakeUseOf has piqued my interest in Bitcoin and I have decided to give it a go after seeing the number of merchants accepting it as payments increase. I downloaded the official Bitcoin client (wallet) and am now waiting for it to finish syncing. The progress bar at the bottom filled to about 60% after leaving the software running overnight. However, when I checked on it in the morning, progress is painfully slow, about 1 block every 20 seconds. It slowed down with around 50,000 blocks left/40% to completion.

I left it on for two more days and still have over 35,000 blocks left. Is this normal? For those with experience, how long did it take for your Bitcoin wallet to sync? Consider your internet speed when responding as mine is 3 Mbit/sec down and 0.333 Mbit/sec...

A “wallet” is basically the Bitcoin equivalent of a bank account. It allows you to receive bitcoins, store them, and then send them to others. There are two main types of wallets. A software wallet is one that you install on your own computer or mobile device. You are in complete control over the security of your coins, but they can sometimes be tricky to install and maintain. A web wallet or hosted wallet is one that is hosted by a third party. They are often much easier to use, but you have to trust the provider to maintain high levels of security to protect your coins. There are four main wallets that we recommend for beginners.

Coinbase

Sending coins with Coinbase

Coinbase is a web wallet with a simple design and a number of very useful features that make it excellent for beginners. You can send and receive bitcoins via email and buy and sell bitcoins directly from Coinbase. A full-featured Android app enables access to all account functions on the go....

Hi @Kevin_Barata,

There's no need to worry, if you sent your coins to the right address everything will be fine

It is important that you pay attention to two things :

keep your key/password/passphrase safe ( those you entered when creating your wallet, you should also have encrypted your wallet )

keep safe your "wallet.dat" file ( it is the most important file that keeps all your addresses )

The synchronization is also a very intensive CPU task, it's not strange It takes a long time ... depending on your hardware specifics and line speed, a full synchronization can take several days.

During synchronization, your download may be stopped until the downloaded data has been "processed".

Please note that you will need to download more than 70GB.

Can you give us some information about your system ( operating system , hardware , line speed ) ?
How many data did you already downloaded ? ( you can check the property of your...

The Bitcoin Core development team released version 0.1 of its wallet software packages for all platforms this morning. The wallet was made available via the BitTorrent protocol, specifically to better serve regions of the world where Bitcoin.org official servers are either banned or hard to access. Among the goodies bundled in the new release were faster block transfer and a new way of setting transaction fees (details follow).

Faster Block Chain Sync

The new wallet drastically improves the speed of the initial block chain synchronization. This method is called “headers first,” and Bitcoin subreddit user thorjag reported that this is faster than even downloading the block chain via BitTorrent. The official release notes explained it like so:

… we first ask peers for block headers (a total of 27 megabytes, as of December 2014) and validate those. In a second stage, when the...

BitRef will help you view the current balance of any Bitcoin address. You need only a device with the Internet and a valid Bitcoin address string. This is a safe service because it uses only public data; there is no need for login and password.

It is possible to monitor many Bitcoin addresses with one request. Just separate the different addresses with a "+" (plus) sign in the address field or in the URL. This way you can enter all your wallet addresses and monitor the entire wallet.

The tool shows the last 50 transactions for every address (or combination of addresses). It shows the date, amount and current balance for every transaction. You can also check the number of confirmations by keeping the mouse pointer over each transaction.

We have a browser extension for Chrome, Firefox and Opera. With the extension you can check Bitcoin address balance by just typing: "btc {space} bitcoin_address" in browser's address bar. Fast and easy.

Download a Bitcoin Wallet

A wallet is a program that sits on your computer and gives you a wallet address, this is a unique string of numbers and letters that you will use to receive bitcoins. Download the client for your computer from https://bitcoin.org/en/download

After installation, you will have to save a file called wallet.dat, keep this file safe, as this contains your unique wallet address within it, including all bitcoins that you will gain. If you lose this file, you cannot recover any bitcoins it contained.

Create a Pool Account Once you have a wallet address, create a pool account. A pool is a huge collection of other people working towards gaining bitcoins. Due to the complexity of mining a bitcoin, it has become unrealistic to solo mine–the act of processing millions of numbers to solve the block...
