About "BIP38" Encryption

The advantage with BIP38 is that if your paper wallet is stolen or compromised, the private key cannot be recovered without your password. Even a very short password adds a strong degree of protection. However, if you encrypt your private key with BIP38 and you lose your password, it will be impossible for you to recover the funds you have sent to this wallet.

Also, note that not all wallet applications or web services are able to import or "sweep" BIP38 encrypted keys. In this case, you will have to use the Validate or Decrypt feature on this webpage to reveal the unencrypted Wallet Import Format (WIF) key as an intermediate step before sweeping the balance.

WARNING: Before sending any funds to a BIP38-encrypted wallet, first do a test make sure you are able to decrypt the printed private key back to ordinary WIF format.

How Bitcoin works

The blockchain is a public ledger of every Bitcoin transaction that is distributed on every machine connected to the Bitcoin network.

Every computer that participates in the Bitcoin network (as a full node - cf. stores and maintains a copy of the blockchain. All blocks in the blockchain are stored in order from oldest to newest. Only new blocks are added to the blockchain, and existing blocks cannot be modified. This is enforced using cryptographic hashing.

When a user spends their bitcoins, they broadcast the transaction to the network, and other nodes (called miners) collect, verify, and save the new transactions in the blockchain. These new updates to the blockchain are grouped...

A cool function of Bitcoin not mentioned in introductions is its message signing and verification feature. I'll use the Satoshi client on a Mac as the example but the same functions are available in the wallet at and in any decent Bitcoin client.

Suppose you have a dispute with a vendor you paid in bitcoin. They say you didn't pay them the correct amount or they didn't get paid at all. So you show them the record of the transaction.

Great, says the vendor, but how do I know that's your coin?

In the Satoshi client, go to the "Receive Coins" tab. At the bottom, you'll see an option that says, "Sign Message" (you can also go to File > Sign Message). Enter the Bitcoin address that you own that initiated the transaction (that's the address to the left of the green arrow in the transaction record mentioned earlier) into the address form. Write your message and then hit the "Sign Message" button.
