I had money on MtGox, can I get it back?

MtGox has millions of USD missing according to the latest news reports. The final draft of what, where, how and why has yet to be published by the administrator however.

Some customers who lost money with MtGox are under the false impression that since their funds were in fiat currency instead of Bitcoin they would be safe and receive all of their money back, this simply isn't the case.

The administrator has already hinted the remaining coins would be sold and all assets pooled for even redistribution. There has been strong support for receiving Bitcoin instead of fiat amongst some creditors but it has yet to be seen how the administrator distributes the remaining funds.

If however MtGox is sold to another entity then this would obviously change the dynamics of the situation. For now there is not much to do but wait for the administrator to finalize his report and wait on an outcome for redistribution or...

Yes, of course.
Money order is considered and verified cash (or cashable check). So, if it has not been used by the recipient then you can always retrieve it to cash or deposit back to your account. The bank knows whether the money has been transferred or used already. So, if they find out your money order has not been used, then there should be no problem getting your money back. Nominal service charge is however expected. A month ago my girlfriend made money order to the apartment that we would live in, but we canceled it and she got the money order back. Even though it has the apartment name and everything, she could deposit it back to her account 'cause it has never been used. Hope this helps.

I have a claim, I am told it has been accepted, but when i log in I get this screen Are you a Kraken user?

If you are a Kraken user, you were able to file your bankruptcy claim via Kraken’s website until July 29, 2015 (Japan time). After 12 noon on July 29, 2015 (Japan time), the only things that a User will be able to do using the Online Method will be to (i) view bankruptcy claims that he or she has filed himself or herself and (ii) transfer his or her bankruptcy claims to another person. However, nearer the time of distribution, the bankruptcy trustee is planning to give Users an opportunity to use the system again to make changes to the details of their bankruptcy claims other than increasing the amount of the bankruptcy claims that Users have filed (for example, changes in their addresses or company names). Users will not be able to file new bankruptcy claims or to increase the amount of the bankruptcy claims that they have filed. It is intended that, at a later stage,...

this from Reddit ... I hope no-one objects to this reposting.
Hello friends,
MtGox is gone. So let's prepare ourselves.
On Tuesday, and for the rest of the week, all hell will break lose in the media. It will be blamed on MtGox, it will be blamed on Bitcoin, it will be blamed on the "bug," and it will, more than anything, be blamed on the "lack of regulation." Pundits and "experts" of all types will weigh in on the calamity. It will be world news in a matter of hours.
Get ready, because it will be an ugly week.
For all of you who lost money, my heart goes out to you. Some people lost a little, some lost a fortune. It will make people sick, and depressed, and full of grief. Personally, I had over 550 BTC in Gox. I will never get any of that back. If misery loves company, then we'll be enjoying a grand feast today.
I should have known better, of course. I take responsibility for leaving those funds with an entity that had proven...

I take a dim view of travel clubs that charge an annual fee for access to special prices. Typically, these schemes only benefit the company offering them. But is Spirit Airlines’ $9 Fare Club in the same category?

Without even reading the online discussions about Spirit’s Fare Club, which costs $39.95 a year, I have to admit my bias: this certainly looks like a rip-off. I mean, joining a “club” to get low fares? In a market that’s already flooded by discount tickets? You’ve gotta be kidding.

And yet, people fall for it. People like Sheryl Sanford, who believed Spirit’s come-on about having access to “incredibly low, member-only fares, sometimes even as low as a penny.” (Offers like that just confuse well-meaning passengers, as we saw yesterday.)

She writes:

I joined the $9 Fare Club expecting and looking for those low fares advertised. They did advertise the lower fares, but after I join the Fare Club, the very flights I was looking at, as you know,...

On February 10 it issued a statement claiming that it had a problem with “transaction malleability” - in essence, somebody could withdraw cash and then alter the ID of the transaction to make it appear that it had never occurred, then request it again. It called this a “bug in the bitcoin software” but bitcoin’s developer community pointed out that the issue had been known about for some time already, and that it was less a bug and more something which needed to be taken into account by developers when creating an exchange service. Other exchanges popped up to say that they were unaffected.

With information and withdrawals both unforthcoming, bitcoins held by MtGox were being bought and sold on a secondary market for less than 20 per cent of the going price. Optimism was not high that the site could resolve its issues.

Yesterday the exchange suddenly stopped all trading and Karpeles told Reuters that the company was at a “turning point”.

Above we see the Microsoft store's policy, according to Mr. Vernon we have 30 days for a full refund. See other retailers for their individual policies. It's very interesting that in the event of consumer dissatisfaction Microsoft does have a show of pride and the assurance of quality in the form of their own money back guarantee to back up their product and as a satement of it's worth. Satisfaction guaranteed or your money back. Could it be that Microsoft is scarred to offer such a guarantee and if so, why?

I'm not sure what you mean by "Could it be that Microsoft is scarred to offer such a guarantee and if so, why?"

What I described is the refund policy for the Microsoft Store.

Microsoft has always offered a 45 day money back guarantee for any of their retail software products?

See the following website for more information.

There has been a ton of speculation as to what happened in the catastrophic failure of MtGox. The only thing we know for sure is that it somehow “lost” upwards of 750,000 of customer BTC, valued around $450 million. A number of theories have been circulating on the internet. Here I’m going to talk about the one that seems the most plausible to me. H/t to /u/PuffyHerb on Reddit for most of this.

The theory is essentially that the U.S. Government seized MtGox’s cold storage wallet and Karpeles can’t disclose that information due to a gag order.

Before getting into that let’s recap the “official” story of what is believed to have happened.

MtGox was ignorant of the transaction malleability issue despite it being known for years and there being a wiki page dedicated to it. They tracked transactions improperly given the malleability issue (this may or may not have happened). They automatically reissued transactions when the transaction ID showed an unconfirmed...

Where to begin?

I'm not a lawyer or an accountant.

In the United States if you aren't registered as a non-profit you're not taking donations. You're making sales. Any income you make is taxable and should be reported every fiscal year. It doesn't matter what age you are or the amount. If you're making income it should be reported. To make matters worse - you can be made to pay back taxes and have information requested as old as 4 years. Which means if you're 16 now you can be audited when you're 19 and owe taxes all the way back.

The biggest statement I see is "Joe Smoe takes donations and doesn't get in trouble". Well when, not if, but when your local tax agency catches on expect a lot of letters to be gotten and back taxes to be paid.

As for the OP with a kid using parent's credit card. That was an unauthorized charge and let me explain why. The child in question probably took the card without permission and then sent money through Paypal. Well you didn't get...

We received a lot of positive feedback on our release of our preliminary investigation into the Willy bot, even though it was already quite old (written circa August 2014). We also said we hoped to release more of our information over time, even though we have to take some care doing so. But while we have good relations to responsibly acquire and exchange information and share efforts, and reception from people online has been very encouraging, official interest has been pretty low.

In recent weeks, there has been a lot of news surrounding the U.S. agents accused of large bitcoin thefts in early 2013, and their interactions with Silk Road as well as MtGox. In the wake of this, there has been intense speculation that what happened at MtGox may have been related to these agents.

With the next creditors' meeting also on the horizon, this seems like a pretty good time for me to step in and share a bit more of what we know. First of all: no, we don't think these agents...

Frenchman Mark Karpeles -- once the high-flying head of the world's busiest Bitcoin trading platform, who reportedly lived in an $11,000-a-month penthouse and spent money lavishly, including on prostitutes -- is facing embezzlement and data manipulation charges.

"He is keeping calm as the trial gets underway," his lawyer Kiichi Iino told AFP, adding that Karpeles plans to plead his innocence.

The 32-year-old was first arrested in August 2015 and released on bail nearly a year later over allegations he fraudulently manipulated data and pocketed millions worth of Bitcoins.

Bitcoin prices have tanked after China signalled it is stepping up scrutiny of the virtual currency. Its value soared to record highs at the end of 2016, largely thanks to strong demand from within China. But China's central bank has announced investigations into the country's biggest Bitcoin exchanges - causing the currency to plunge.

About $22 million worth of the digital currency...

I have a tale of woe. It involves MtGox and my personal dealings with them.

First, I will tell you a bit of the back story so that you may understand my woe.

When ASICMiner first introduced their buy policy last month for their new Block Eruptor USB 300 MH/s bitcoin miners on the 5th several BitcoinTalk uses generously setup threads where people could band together to make up the minimum number to order (it was 300 but it was later reduced to 50).

The person that set up the group buy would then make the order from ASICMiner and once they had received the miners they would repackage them and sent them onto their new homes.

I, living in New Zealand had a problem though. These group buys were localised to a few geographical regions and as normal for us Kiwi's we were not in any of them. In fact, over 70% of the world's population was not able to get the new bitcoin miner. It is quite understandable though, international shipping is a pain and very expensive...

Let me warn you, this is going to be a bit of a rant and if you’re not in the mood for one rather scroll down a little to where I want to offer some tips.

Whilst the rest of the world made an absolute killing on Bitcoin yesterday thanks to China, most of us South Africans sat and watched with envy. See, China went ahead and does what China often does .. moaned about something Internet related. This time it was about Bitcoin and guess what happened? The price of Bitcoin plunged from $1200 odd down to around $560 over night. Of course, the price drop was caused through the fear of the general public, but those who do a bit of trading on any form of stock market will know that this is often a really good time to quickly snap up stock and that’s exactly what we should have been doing. I’ve learnt a fair bit about trading and one thing I try to do is predict what the general uninformed public will do and try to trade in and around them to my benefit. Anyway, China isn’t the be...

The stock market is not crashing yet, but there are lots of other market crashes happening in the financial world right now. Just like we saw back in 2008, it is taking stocks a little bit of extra time to catch up with economic reality. But almost everywhere else you look, there are signs that a financial avalanche has begun. Bitcoins are crashing, gold and silver are plunging, the price of oil and the overall demand for energy continue to decline, markets all over Europe are collapsing and consumer confidence in the United States just had the biggest miss relative to expectations that has ever been recorded. In many ways, all of this is extremely reminiscent of 2008. Other than the Bitcoin collapse, almost everything else that is happening now also happened back then. So does that mean that a horrible stock market crash is coming as well? Without a doubt, one is coming at some point. The only question is whether it will be sooner or later. Meanwhile, there are a whole lot of...
